The subject that seems to bring the most readers to this blog and generate the most questions is remote access. It is by far the #1 concern for those wishing to add security cameras to their home or business and it’s also the biggest disappointment people have with the system they currently have.

Simply put, remote access is the ability to view your security cameras from somewhere other than a monitor connected to the DVR itself. This is accomplished by connecting the DVR to the buildings computer network using the built in network port. An IP address for your network is assigned to the DVR and then any computer in your network can be used to access the DVR. It is relatively easy to then set up the system to be viewed from home, another office, a coffee shop, or anywhere else you can get internet access!

There are two basic ways to connect to your DVR, the first is dedicated software that the manufacturer supplies that you install on the computer or computers that you want to use to monitor with. The second way is becoming more popular with manufacturers and is using the browser Internet Explorer to access the software that is built in to the DVR.

This is an actual screenshot of remote access using IE from one of the DVRs that we carry. Each company has their own built in software so the usability of it can vary greatly. I am constantly hearing from people who are disappointed with the remote access they get from the DVR that they bought from someone else. As you can see from our screenshot the software used on the DVRs we sell is the best available. We looked at several different DVRs and found this the best. You can perform all of the administrative functions such as adding or deleting users, setting up cameras, scheduling recordings, etc.. You can view cameras live or call up and view recorded video, and save recorded video to a file for later use. As you can see, the video is crisp and sharp (the quality of video ultimately rests on the quality of the camera) and depending on the speed of your internet connections, you can view the live video in close to real time!

The EL Series is an enterprise class digital video recorder utilizing H.264 hardware compression DSPs. The EL Series can push real-time video and audio recording at CIF resolution on every channel or 7.5 FPS at a full 4CIF(D1) resolution on every channel.
